SCM Batch (18-20) Field Visit - TATA Motors
The students of Supply Chain Management batch - 2018-20 at SIIB, Pune were taken for an industry visit at Tata Motors on 4th February 2019, by the faculty in-charge of SCM - Mr. Venkatesh Iyengar. TATA Motors Pune, is located in the Pimpri-Chinchwad industrial belt of Maharashtra. A 40 minutes’ drive from SIIB, the students were first taken to Apprentice Hostels for a quick session of high tea.
Following the warm welcome, we hopped on TATA Wingers that the company had graciously arranged for our plant tour. We were then taken on a tour of the entire plant, starting with the training school, followed by HCV assembly, leading to passenger vehicles production and assembly, a visit to the R&D section of the plant, each line visit with elaborate explanations on the production of vehicles.
Various SCM concepts were on display in the mega-factory, like Just in Time, Total Quality Management, Material Management Centers, Centralized Documentation Facility, etc. , which enhanced our field trip and made for a great learning experience. The awe-inspiring assembly plant visit was followed by a trip to the Lake House, a lush sprawling location, maintained as a commitment to the environment by TATA Motors.
Following the incredible plant visit, we had a lunch session, and then a brief question and answer discussion, in which our basic doubts pertaining to the organization and plant production were clarified. After the enriching learning experience and a photo session with our field guides, students returned to the SIIB campus, more knowledgeable and excited about the industry than ever before.
