HR Industry Visit to Tata Motors
Pursuing a career in management not only requires academic learning but also practical exposure and implication of all the theories and hypothesis. Hence, in order to get hands on experience of working with the management of a well known manufacturing industry of the country, the faculty of HR , SIIB arranged an Industry Visit to Tata Motors. Dr. Dharmesh K Mishra, Associate Professor (HR), accompanied the HR (2016-2018) & (2015-17) batch of SIIB on 1 Feb, 2017 to Tata Motors located at Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune.
Details of Journey/Work Plan
The students left the SIIB campus at 8.30 am and reached the Tata Motors Apprentice Training Centre. The students were directed to the Conference Hall at 9:45 am, where they were shown a Corporate Film on Tata Motors. This gave us a brief insight on the Company culture, mission, vision, their products and services .This was followed by an enriching interaction with Tata Motors Business HR, Mr Sagar Raje where he gave them his insights on the Learning Management System, Performance Management System for workers and HR processes at the company. His 25 years of valuable experience at the company helped the students to get a clearer picture about handling the employees at the present VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity) times.
Later, the students were then taken to the Pimpri Plant in open wingers, which made the visit all the more fun and extremely interesting. The plant is spread over 1200 acres with 11 canteens. It has 6000 permanent workers and 22000 workers/month are hired on temporary basis. The plant has an infrastructure which includes Press Shop, TQM Centre, Quality Circle Centre, Training Hall and Library which facilitates the workers and employees there. The students were able to see the assembling of various Tata passenger vehicles and trucks and were explained on the workmen culture in the plant. The plant visit took us approximately close to 2 hours
Post the plant visit, the batch was taken to the artificial lake of Tata where they spent close to 10 minutes enjoying the scenic beauty of the place. Later, they were dropped back to the conference room area for lunch. Later after lunch, the students had a very brief interaction with one of the employees who is with Tata Motors for past 6 years. The batch left for the campus at around 2.15 pm and reached back SIIB at 3 pm.
The entire experience was truly enriching and the batch could relate a lot of things they had in their academic learning to the practical scenarios which were told to them and which they could witness at the plant.
