Guest Lecture on Substance Abuse

Symbiosis Institute of International Business (SIIB) organized a guest lecture on ‘Substance Abuse’ by Mr. Sunil Dorge, Police Inspector, Anti-Narcotics cell, Pune Division, on 16th August, 2017 at SIIB auditorium. He talked about various forms of drugs such as natural, synthetic, psychotropic etc. and different alter effects they have on the body. Natural drugs can be classified as Cannabis, Opium, Hashish etc. while synthetic drugs like Heroin, Brown Sugar are made from opium. Psychotropic drugs like LSD and Methamphetamine are equally harmful to the body.

Government of India has banned 235 types of drugs and consuming, transporting, possessing and financing these types of drugs is a punishable offense which will result in 10 years to 20 years of jail time including fine ranging from 1 lakh to 2 lakh rupees. It can also result in death penalty for previous conviction. Mr. Dorge also highlighted that students are usually prone to drugs and they are lured by peddlers in order to finance and create network for the same. These narcotics are habit forming and once a person is addicted to it, it can result in shelling out high amounts of money. A person can also resort to theft and other socially unacceptable crimes in order to consume drugs.

Mr. Dorge also stated the horrific effects of various drugs on the body including Loss of Memory, Attention, Decision Making, Depression, Aggression, Hallucinations, brain damage and strokes. It can also result in family problems like domestic violence, separation, divorce, child abuse etc. It was an informative session and provided deep insights about the legal implications of drug abuse which is a prevalent problem in our society.
