SIIB Leadership Series
2008

“Leadership is not about knowing the future. It is
about enabling it.”
SIIB Leadership Series is the flagship event of SIIB.
This conclave held every year since 2002, cherishes
and celebrates the spirit of leadership. This event
has come to become an exceptional platform where
some of the finest and most successful personalities
of India Inc. have shared their experiences with
budding managers of SIIB and delegates of prominent
B-Schools.
Some of the eminent
speakers who have graced the event in earlier years

"Leadership Series 2008"
The theme this year was “
Journey to Success ”. SIIB's
flagship event of the year, Leadership Series 2008
was organised on September 21st, 2008. The Chief Guest
for the day was Ms. Ranjana Kumar, Vigilance
Commissioner of the apex body created to address
governmental corruption. Besides her, the eminent

The event was
inaugurated by Ms. Ranjana Kumar in the esteemed presence of Dr.(Mrs.) Rajni Gupte,
Director SIIB.

"Lighting the Lamp"
The event commenced with the
inaugral speech by Ms. Ranjana Kumar,
Vigilance Commissioner of the apex body created to
address governmental corruption. Ms. Ranjana spoke
about success, the elements of success, the
behaviours for success, the mindsets for success.
She stressed upon the fact patience, persistence &
perspiration make an unbeatable combination for
success. Difficult should be a word erased from out
vocabulary was what she firmly advocated. Also
touching upon the behaviours for success and the
mindsets for success, she advised successful persons
chase their dreams vigorously . Quoting famous
writers like Napoleon Hill, Benjamin, Franklin A B
Alcott, Colin Powell to illicit the meaning of
success, she enchanted the audience with her real
life experiences as a "Turn around queen" for Bank
of India.

Mr. R.R. Balakrishnan,
Chairman and Chief Creative Officer, Lowe
Lintas India Pvt. Ltd. was the first speaker
of the day. He is credited with creating
some of India’s most recognized
advertisement campaigns such as Idea, Surf
Excel, Tata Tea, Lifebuoy, Havell etc. and
has also directed the movie “Cheeni Kum.”
Balki, as he is popularly known as, gave
valuable insights about the advertising
business which he termed as The Factory of
Minds and also what it takes to be a leader
in such an industry. “A leader needs to
protect the people’s mind and |

help them achieve what they want to achieve”
said he. He also spoke about how advertising
highlights problems of the society and
offers solutions to them in a creative
manner. He showcased some of his work from
the past which included some advertising
campaigns of Idea, Tata Tea, Surf Excel and
took the students through the creation of
these advertisements in a lucid manner which
the students could connect well with.He also
added that advertisements should be termed
to be successful, not just because they win
awards but more importantly only if they can
connect well with the Indian consumers.
Further, he shared his experience of
directing Amitabh Bacchan and Tabu in his
movie “Cheeni Kum”. He also differentiated
Indian advertising from the rest of the
world in terms of style, culture and mindset
of Indian people. |

Mr. Prabir Kumar Aditya,
Director(IT) ,United Health Group a $ 70
billion company specializing in health care
and services. Mr Prabir spoke Keeping with
the theme of SIIB leadership Series "Journey
to Success" about the growth of United
Health Group in India and how difficult it
was to scale up the function in health care
sector with too many regulations by
Government. He empasized on the growing
additional working force of 83 million by
2010 and the educational capacity going up
to 195 million and thus the opportunities
it brings to |

companies like UHG. Mr Prabir further explained the
recipe for the success of UHG highlighting the fact
that the approach should be a bottom up, starting
with a motivated individual to good team harmony and
co-ordination and moving upto to the organization
aligning with the ultimate goal. He explained
through equations like CQ + EQ> IQ stating that its
actually competitive quotient plus emotional
quotient should be greater than Intelligent
quotient. He thus motivated students to take up
challenges in life and not be scared to innovate and
take risk. |

Mr.Vipin Ghate ,Head
HR, Suzlon Infrastructure Services Ltd has over 22
years of industry experience in HR & Administration. The theme ‘Journey to success’ was
apt as Mr.Ghate described how Mr.Tulsi Tanti, the
founder of Suzlon energy grew the company from a
small organization of 20 employees to the leading
wind turbine manufacturing company in Asia.. Mr.Ghate
also made everyone aware that the journey to
success is not an easy one. He narrated
many challenges which Suzlon tackled to make
sure that it reaches |

the position where it is today. Mr.Ghate
also highlighted the CSR activities undertaken by
Suzlon. And finally, Mr.Ghate
concluded by saying that ‘Journey to success’ is not
over once you reach a particular milestone, but it
is just one small step in the long journey to
success. Mr.Ghate said, with the development of
offshore technology in the wind power generation
industry, the successful journey of Suzlon hasn’t
ended, it has only just begun |

Mr. Ramesh Chandak, MD& CEO of KEC
International Ltd. which is one of the largest power transmission
infrastructure companies in the world and a part of
the RPG group. Mr. Chandak’s talk was centered
around the theme - ‘The journey to Success’, and he
used the KEC case study to illustrate the same.
While talking about what it meant to be
successful, Mr. Chandak spoke of Failure- as
being the first step to success,
Accomplishment- as the second step to
success, Success- as a string of
accomplishments, and True Success- as when
the need is felt to redefine success itself. |

Mr. Ravi Kastia is the Global Head of Aditya Birla
Group and also the Managing Director & CEO of Essel
Mining & Industries Limited. Mr. Kastia started off with
showing a small video on Aditya Birla Group and
showed how Late Shri G. D. Birla contributed to the
independence of the country and social upliftment of
the masses. He told how in the late 80’s Shri Aditya
Birla took over the reins of the company and started
the business in South East Asia which was an open
market.

Mr Gautam
Rajadhyaksha, one of India's best known celebrity
portraitist, having photographed almost all the
icons of the Indian Film industry, had graced the
Leadership Series at SIIB as one of our esteemed
guest speakers. He completely enthralled the
young audience with the celebrity
photographs from his famous book FACES. He
adorned it with anecdotes in his speech,
describing what happened when photographing
them or while just chatting with them. The
students were spellbound with the intricacy
of the |

soft-focus
technique that he has pioneered. He pepped up the
young crowd by asking them to “feel like a star” and
more importantly to “follow their heart”. The
audience chuckled with delight at his witty
one-liners. It was a rendezvous to remember for
times to come. |
